Long-Term, Respite & Day Care

In an assisted living home setting, the terms long-term care, respite care, and day care refer to different types of services provided based on a resident’s needs and length of stay. At Colten Adult Care, the vast majority of our residents are long-term. Periodically however we do have a family that needs support with a short-term respite stay or even day care, which we are more than happy to help with if we can. Here’s how these service options differ:

Long-Term Care

Ongoing, permanent care for individuals with chronic conditions, disabilities or progressive illnesses such as dementia or Parkinson’s, who need assistance with daily living activities (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, medication management, and mobility, in a safe, stable, supportive & loving environment until the end of life.

Respite Care

These stays provide the same assistance with ADLs as long-term stays do and can last a few days to several weeks. They are designed for seniors who live at home but need temporary placement to recover from an illness or provide a much-needed break for their primary & other family caregivers. Respite can also offer social engagement opportunities that usually aren’t available at home.

Day Care (Adult Day Services)

Daytime care for seniors who need supervision, socialization, or medical support but return home at the end of the day. These visits are perfect for individuals who live with family members who work but need structured activities and support for a few hours or a full day, usually on weekdays or specific days per week. Services include social activities, light medical care such as medication administration, meals & snacks, and assistance with some ADLs, with the goal to provide socialization, mental stimulation, and relief for family caregivers while allowing seniors to remain in their home environment.
